Evaluation FMP 2021

My project started with researching into three different themes. I was going to were dreams, Japanese culture and memories. I spent my time looking at Japanese patterns and Japanese art. I also looked up art that was created from peoples dreams and I also looked at my dad‘s work from his exhibition of memories. whilst researching all. of this I was coming up with more more ideas in my head whilst researching all of this I was coming up with more more ideas in my head. Throughout my research I started to get thinking about what I could experiment with. my experiments started off with drawing and exploring textures and patterns. I feel like this was my main focus throughout my project. I looked at shabori and also Japanese bowls. When it came to looking at patterns I wanted to look at something that was quite different and creating worksheet using patterns of my own. When it came to the illustrating side of things I wanted to include my own type of illustrations and when the project started to come along I decided to incorporate memories into my project. As I started to explore this I came to the realisation that I wanted to incorporate memories from childhood as we did this in a project previously and I did very well in it. During research in Japanese culture I realised that I was quite interested in Japanese scrolls. as a result of this ended up becoming my final outcome. Also after experimenting with shabori that also became part of my final outcome however I included it into my Japanese scrolls. There were other types of I wanted to include however I was thinking about time and the scale of things I wanted to do. One of the things I attempted was acrylic carving however I knew that would’ve been too time consuming so I never managed to do it. Throughout my project I was looking at pattern and texture and one of the things that I tried out was rust dying. It was an interesting technique and if I was drawing on fabric that was the type of fabric I would’ve used. After this I decided to see how I could get this effect on paper so I decided to stain paper with some coffee. This became the base of my second scroll. After researching through The work my dad created with his memories exhibition I decided to use photographs as a starting point. The scroll goes from when I was in my moms belly and go straight through into me. I’ve also included words and phrases that are in Japanese connected to the images. The first set of schools is the shabori that I did. This is Japanese tie-dye which is intricate folds and also using a string or elastic bands. I decided to use the shabori as a basis for creating more scrolls. This type of scroll is called scroll art. It’s a decorative piece that you hang in your home. The actual process for this went pretty smoothly. The only problem I ran into was staining the wood. But I found the solution in the end. It was about finding what worked for it. The final outcome was better the I could have ever imagined. It just looks so good when it’s hung up. They way that the patten flows through each one. And they go so well together. I also thought the would wouldn’t match but it just adds something rustic to it. When it came to the illustration scroll I hit quite a large bump in the road. I didn’t leave enough room to attach the wood for the scroll effect however I cut a piece off the other side and attached it. It worked perfectly. The wood fit perfectly which meant it rolls up just the way I wanted it. The outcome was also better than I imagined. The drawing just look so quirky but they represent me and my family and that’s exactly what I wanted.
