Life drawing 16•09•20

Today was probably one of the most challenging days. I was on my feet all day drawing a women’s human form in line drawing. It was extremely interesting as I’ve never done anything like it before. I thought it was a very productive day. Drawing to that much detail and scale was challenging for me because I want things to be perfect so when it didn’t look right it was really frustrating but all I needed to remember was to keep looking as I was drawing. I realised this when i did a quick drawing with charcoal for a minute where I barely looked down at my paper. The end result was messy and not perfect.

Body art research

The first drawing is from the artist George Grosz. The drawing isn’t of the full body, just torso and part of the legs but I find that quite fascinating because the way the drawing has been made is spectacular. The legs just cut off but you can feel the form of the body, you can feel how muscular it is. At first glance I couldn’t tell if it was a man or a women but the top half says woman, not quite sure about the bottom half. Either way it’s a beautiful drawing. The second drawing is by the artist Jenny Saville and it is a beautiful piece. I love how some of it is in line drawing and other parts are tonal, it really makes it stand out. It’s messy but tidy and elegant at the same time. It has the same effect as Grosz’ drawing, the fact that it isn’t complete just adds something to it for me, I find that really fascinating for some reason. I love the composition of it and how all the figures are laid out and they overlap each other. It’s a really stunning piece. The final drawing is by the artist Euan Uglow. I wanted to include his work in comparison to the other pieces. Yes it a good piece however its missing something. Although there is an element of story telling as this women doesn’t have a face. She could be anyone you want her to be. I wanted to include it in my research because it has really good form. You can see and feel the fact that the person is sitting. It doesn’t look like shes leaning, she’s sitting. The other reason for including it within my research is because that is something I struggled with when drawing my own piece. I couldn’t quite figure out how to get it to look as though she was sitting. The artist has used lines in different areas to show this, so when I go back to the drawing or start a different piece I can hopefully use that to show better form.
